Emotional Attachments and Letting go

Emotional attachments can consist of feeling close and having a bond with the person, place or thing. They can be hard to break even at the best of times. attachment can create needs for intimacy, companionship and validation which can leave you feeling unfulfilled and lost.

Emotional attachment can sometimes happen off the back of unhealed trauma, childhood issues and co-dependency issues. This can consist of:

  • You rely on their approvals
  • You have lost your sense of self
  • You don’t know how to function without them
  • The relationship is emotionally unbalanced

Factors come into play here which can stem from low self-esteem, lack of self-worth, unhealed wounds and feeling unworthy. These can cause a detrimental affect on our mental health and wellbeing.

We can have attachments to objects and memories too. This can bring on nostalgia and cause us to feel comforted; however this can also hold us to the past and hold us from moving on or letting go.

We need to be aware when emotional attachment causes us to go into turmoil and be in a place of sadness and unhappiness. Here are some signs:

  • You feel as though you cant live without that thing, person or object
  • The thought of loosing it causes extreme anxiety and distress
  • You feel unsafeĀ  not having it
  • Your attachment interferes with your ability to meet your basic needs
  • You fear being alone

There are solutions at hand though!

  • Dedicate some time to self-discovery
  • Create time to do things for yourself that you enjoy
  • Work towards building healthy and strong, positive relationships especially one with yourself to help you feel secure

Attachment issues do tend to begin in childhood. Your earliest relationships can have a huge impact on how you form bonds as an adult. In therapy you can have the support you need to help you on your healing journey and can help you:

  • Work to understand your attachment style
  • Learn healthier relationship skills
  • Develop a stronger sense of self
  • Explore helpful strategies for meeting your own needs

The important thing to notice is with emotional attachments is when you feel uncomfortable, low energy and lost. This can be warning signs of emotional attachments on a deeper level. Not feeling yourself and wanting validation.

Learning to love yourself once again and finding out the root causes to your attachments will help you to feel better within, more fulfilled and will enable you to express yourself more freely.

The power lies within you and so do your strengths. identify what helps you feel good, where you feel motivated and focus your time on your passions and enhancing your self-worth. You will see the changes happen and your mindset will shift, enabling you to live a more content, happy life that works for you.
