Letting go of Control

Letting go is a tough one. We have spent years of our life learning how to hold onto everything and have been conditioned to believe that going with the flow is too carefree and not ‘enough action’. However, letting go is actually quite the opposite. Letting go of control is the most freeing thing you can do for yourself. The desire to be able to control our surroundings and circumstances is ingrained into ourconsciousness. This is because the more we know about our world, the safer we feel. On the other hand, the less we know, the more scared we feel.

People who try to control everything may experience more stress and anxiety than those who don’t. Feeling the need to be in control and not having it can make us feel dissatisfied.

BUT what can be gained by letting go of control?

  • Creates more peace and relaxation
  • Better prepared for the unexpected
  • Enhanced connection with self and others

How to let go of control?

Firstly establish what you are holding on to and why. What are your fears here? Is there something you need to heal?

Practice mindfulness– this helps to get you into the present moment and relax. It also increases awareness to your feelings and thoughts

Journal– This is a huge stress relief- helps you understand your thoughts and work out the root cause of where they started from as well as helping establish solutions

Get support– Everyone needs support emotionally and mentally. So getting support from a therapist or loved one will help you see where you need help and healing.

The pathway of control is led initially be fear which creates attachment to the thing or person. Self-acceptance is also key to understanding how to be more in the now and know that change is there if you want it and are ready for it. Control is a learnt behaviour to know how to survive and can put you into fight or flight mode. They key to eliminate this way of being is re-programming the mind to think differently therefore changing your emotions and behaviours towards situations or those around you.

Relax, surrender and allow yourself to be held by the support of the universe and watch how your life shifts to a more positive place of being.
